System Year Comments
Mac OS 8.x
Mac OS 8.0 July 22, 1997 A major rewrite!
The interface had many changes to it,
and was more organized than during the System 7.x days.
This OS had a hardware exclusion list.
It dropped support for 68000, 68020 and 68030.
I purchased this OS in July 1997.

January 1998 This system had a hardware exclusion list.
It was the last release to support the 680x0 processor,
but it only supported the 68040.
This OS was buggy on my 5400,
so after about 2 weeks, I reverted to 8.0
After a wipe of the HD when my Cube came in,
I installed this OS on my 5400.
Mac OS 8.5 Box
Mac OS 8.5 October 15, 1998 This was the first release to only support the PowerPC chip.
This release was only out about a month before 8.5.1 came out,
so as a result, it was not on my Power Mac 5400 for very long.
I installed it on November 3, 1998.

After I wiped and re-installed OS 8.1, I found out I couldn't print
from my Cube to the shared printer on the 5400.
Then, I updated to 8.5.1 on the 5400 and printing worked again.
